Edible and medicinal wild plants

Learn about the edible and medicinal uses of wild plants of our forests, fields, and back yards. This presentation focuses on native and naturalized local plants and how they have been used for food and medicine, including plants traditionally used as folk remedies and by Native Americans.

Please note that the first half hour will be occupied by the annual meeting of the Delaware Botanic Gardens, an opportunity to learn about its progress.

Dr. Susan Yost is a botanist and an ecologist. She received her Ph.D. in botany from the City University of New York, master of science degree in biology from Lehman College, and bachelor of science degree in biology from City College in New York City. From 2001 to 2014, she was the educator at the Claude E. Phillips Herbarium at Delaware State University, where she did educational outreach, worked with the herbarium's collection of 150,000 pressed plants, and taught botany courses in the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Previously she taught at several colleges in New York and New Jersey: Manhattanville, Barnard, Ramapo, and Lehman Colleges. She was also forest ecologist at Wave Hill in New York. She is a native of New York City, has lived in Dover, for the past twenty-six years, and enjoys hiking and bicycling.
